A great non-hateletter written to this cartoonist

November 22, 2012

I just received this last week, and I thought I’d share a non-hateletter for once.-lalo

Dear sir-
I’m not sure how to word this email, but I know it must be sent.

Years ago I moved from my beloved SoCal, in the I.E., to the Rocky Mountain west.
Recently I happened to StumbleUpon one of your comic strips, and the following 3 thoughts crossed my mind, in this order:

1.) This strip is funny. I wish it was in our paper here.
2.) I remember this. It brings back fond memories of my California home.
3.) Oh crap. I emailed this cartoonist a really shitty message a long time ago about how his strip wasn’t as good as, say, Boondocks, and needed to quit wasting space on the funny pages.

I do not recall what possessed me to take the time to email you back then. I really don’t. & I doubt you even remember it. But it was inappropriate, uncalled for, and I’m sorry. Please keep up the good work.

Sincerely,
Dustin

(I removed his last name because I’m too lazy to ask permission)

El Pocho Lalo Alcaraz featured in Columbia Journalism Review

September 10, 2012

Pocho.com and my longtime work speaking to bicultural Latinos and plain ol’ pochas y pochos has been covered nicely by the Columbia Journalism Review. I lament the length of time it has taken for the mainstream media to catch up to the work many Chicano artists and writers and CARTOONISTS have been doing for years.

My San Diego Comic-Con 2012 trail of destruction

July 11, 2012

I will be storming San Diego Comic-Con 2012 in my old hometown again and want to let you know where I will be, in case you wanna skip the True Blood panel or the D&D strategy session.

Although the preview starts wednesday night, Comic-Con has already been swarmed by people hell- bent on attending events other than mine, which is fine by me. But if you want to check out MY Comic-Con events, here they are:

COUNTER-CON, The Inner City Comics, Animation, and Games Art Panel: Friday at 1pm, I will be trying something brand new, and I will be a panelist at an off-site, brand new convention aimed at the under-served kids in the barrio and the hood, namely Southeast San Diego. Counter-Con will host some  panels featuring several professionals  in animation, TV, comics and more, basically for kids who don’t usually get a chance to attend Comic-Con. CC features founder Jerry Lee Brice and others, meaning me, talking about our careers and tips for aspiring cartoonists and artists of color. CC goes from 1pm-4pm.

SIGNING at UNIVERSAL UCLICK BOOTH: Friday afternoon at 4:30 pm I will be signing here at Booth #1714 with copies of Latino USA and prints available for purchase!

Friday night I’m going to my syndicate’s dinner, and chewing the fat with the home team. Sorry, no wookies allowed.

THE ROOTS FACTORY: Saturday at 6pm I will be at performing my semi-hilarious cartoon slide show at The Roots Factory in Logan Heights. See the awesome video trailer! There will be a solo show of my art, and live music by Puente and spinning beats by DJ Boxy Dee, plus live screen printing of some of my tshirt designs by the Roots Factory crew.

All the while I will be reporting in to KPFK’s Pocho Hour of Power radio show, Friday at 4pm, and blogging for NBC Latino. Unless I am captured by Stormtroopers. Stay tooned here for nerdarrific pics from Comic-Con!

I kinda won another 1st Place Editorial Cartoon Prize at SoCal Journo Awards

June 25, 2012

I won 1st Place for Best Editorial Cartoon last night at the 54th Annual Southern California Journalism Awards. The star-crammed and Martin-Sheened evening at downtown L.A.’s historic Biltmore Hotel was capped with a tribute to Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein (Carl and Lalo in second pic). I snapped a few photos, and have also included the main winning cartoon that I entered. It is my second straight year winning, and my 6th overall Press Club award. During the event, I hung out briefly at the LA Times table, who generously invited me to attend, but mostly I chilled at the KCET table, who generously bought me a whisky.

Woodward and Bernstein spoke, (Woodward through Skype) and they detailed how corrupt the disgraced President Nixon really was.

A brief update explaining my lack of LaloAlcaraz.com updates

June 20, 2012

Can you hear me now, brain?

Hola, I apologize for anyone reading my stale last post, let’s just say I have been a little busy in the last few months. Un short update:

  • My web startup Pocho.com has launched and been active for over 6 months, serving over 500 stories and a pochotrillion page views
  • The book I illustrated, and authored by Ilan Stavans, Latino USA: A Cartoon History, 15th Anniversary Edition has been released (it’s the paperback 2nd edition really)
  • I have signed a new book deal along with Mr. Stavans, and we are working this year on our new history graphic novel book, I forget the title at this moment, but it’s comin!
  • My good friend @MexicanMitt has become a Twitter sensation, and has been covered by all sorts of media, and has been named by Politico as in the Top 10 Funniest Parody Political Twitter accounts
  • I was on the Rachel Maddow Show talking about Self-Deportation
  • I got a TV deal, and am writing an animated TV pilot for a major TV network. Yes, I said TV
  • I am writing and drawing a comic book story for the awesome Bongo Comics, home of Bart Simpson and his yellow complected family whose last name escapes me.
  • I am writing a kids book with lots of funny comics in it
  • A new writing partner and I are working on a cool book concept that will blow everyone out of the water but I can’t tell you what it is yet
  • I joined the faculty of Otis College of Art & Design in L.A., teaching Editorial Illustration
  • I have become a contributor to NBC Latino, and have posted many snarky and not so snarky video posts about stuff happening in the news
  • I am drawing my daily La Cucaracha plus editorial cartoons not only for my syndicate, Universal Uclick, but also for The Frying Pan and El Diario New York
  • And what may explain everything above, I have gotten a sponsorship from Red Bull. It gives you wings. And some jitters

And I’m sure I forgot something, oh, like I was named in L.A. Weekly’s Most Interesting People in L.A. of 2012. That was cool.  And since 2005 I have been doing my radio show, KPFK 90.7 FM’s Pocho Hour of Power, with guests like Sandra Bernhard, Los Lobos and Mr. Paul Mooney. So, please forgive me for not posting new stuff, just check back here, or at Pocho.com or at my Twitter @laloalcaraz and you will get plenty of self-promotion, humorous tidbits and outrageously righteous proclamations about stuff happening in the news. Gracias!

Lalo Alcaraz on Patt Morrison’s Radio Show on KPCC in LA

January 25, 2012

Lalo Alcaraz & Patt Morrison at Southern California Public Radio's sweeeet newish studios

I am a longtime Patt Morrison fan, and was happy to be invited to be on her show on LA’s KPCC and Southern California Public Radio, daily from 1-3pm PST. We talked about Pochismo, the Presidential Race, satire, and of course, the man of the moment, @MexicanMitt. You can listen to the show here, or catch it at the end of this review by SCPR’s awesome Multi-American Blog.
